[edit] Mouse and keyboard selection

You can use either the mouse, or the keyboard to select individual, or multiple files

With the mouse:

  • you can click an item to select it (double click to open)
  • you can select a range of files by clicking the file on one end of the sequence, holding down SHIFT, and clicking the file at the other end.
  • hold down CMD and use click/click and drag to add more files to the selection

With the keyboard:

  • shift-up/down will start a selection of a range of files.
  • You can use PgUp/PgDown to scroll through the item list in the main pane.
  • Select All items (cmd-A or Edit > Select All can also come very handy, as well as Select None (alt+shift+cmd-a or Edit > Select None), and
  • Invert selection (Edit > Invert selection)

When using the keyboard, ForkLift > Preferences > General > Enable keyboard selection is a very important option. Once turned on, a selection cursor appears in the file list.

  • this option enables you to use the space bar to select/deselect the item on which the cursor is positioned.
  • PgUp/PgDown will now move the selection cursor along with the scrolling (as opposed to just scrolling the view, like in Finder)

NOTE: Enabling space for keyboard selection disables the space > QuickLook shortcut otherwise available for users with Finder/default keybinding sets.

[edit] Using Filters and Search

You can select multiple files responding to some common criteria using the Select... panel, or the Spotlight search and filter functions.

For advanced selection operations on the items listed in the active pane, select Edit > Select... from the menu.

  • Use the input box to select items with corresponding filenames. You can use the * operator to indicate any character string, and ? to indicate any character. e.g.: to select all files beginning with a 3 digit number followed by the word 'BinaryNights' followed by some other characters, enter: ???BinaryNights*
  • You can add up consecutive selections by checking 'extend selection' and using Select, instead of Select & Close.

[edit] Comparing items in the two panes

This is a very basic tool that we included into ForkLift until we have a real file synchronization module.

Compare the item lists of the two panels by filename by selecting files 'with matching filename' or files 'with diffrent filenames' and clicking 'Select & Close'.
